Coming and in the works

  • Piggly Wiggly, U.S. 31: the Homewood store closed Dec. 31, 2025 for a major redevelopment: a larger store, more parking, better traffic flow, safer access for children using the nearby tunnel and new green space. The city said it was expected to reopen by the end of 2026. The U.S. 31 pedestrian tunnel beside it is also being renovated.
  • Dutch Bros, 832 Green Springs Highway: on Oct. 6 the Planning Commission recommended approval of a reduced landscape buffer but voted 4-2 against full traffic access to and from Raleigh Avenue. The City Council has the final say.
  • Small restaurant, 215 West Valley Ave.: the Planning Commission approved a resurvey for the site on Oct. 6, where a small restaurant is proposed.
  • The Woods, West Homewood: the City Council held a public hearing on Oct. 12 on this proposed golf and restaurant venue, with a vote expected Oct. 26.
  • 184 Oxmoor Road: a resurvey approved Sept. 1 could provide parking if the property is redeveloped; any new use would need separate approval, the city said.

Rule changes for businesses

  • Minor vehicle repair: on Oct. 12 the City Council approved a zoning amendment defining minor vehicle repair, routine work done entirely inside a building, which clarifies where those businesses may operate.
  • Electric vehicle chargers: a proposal to limit where charging stations can go is still under review by the council.
  • Data centers: a temporary moratorium approved in June remains while the city writes standards. See our building permits and zoning guide.
  • Homewood Chamber of Commerce plans to move to the third floor of City Hall under a lease the council took up Oct. 12; the move is still several months away.
