The city spent nearly $1 million renovating the Central Park playground in 2024, Homewood Parks says. A small playground with swings and a spinner was planned for the Saulter Road pocket park after a grant came through in December 2024.

Shades Creek Greenway

The city calls the greenway a favorite for walking, running and cycling, used by residents, Samford University students and visitors from across the region. In January 2025 the city opened a 1.4-mile Phase 2 extension westward toward Red Mountain Park. The city counts 145,600 visitors a year and calls it the key east-west link in the Red Rock Trail System, which aims for a 36-mile loop from Red Mountain Park to Ruffner Mountain.

  • No motorized vehicles on the Phase 1 and 2 trails, by city ordinance. Electric bikes are allowed.
  • In February 2026 the City Council heard plans to link the greenway through West Oxmoor into Red Mountain Park and approved streetlights along the trail.
  • A new Greenway Pavilion gets a ribbon cutting, with the dedication of Christina’s Trail, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 1800 S. Lakeshore Drive by the soccer fields.
