Homewood road work: the I-65 and Lakeshore Parkway diverging diamond (through fall 2027), US 31 signal work and the Hollywood Boulevard bridge project.

Last checked Oct. 17, 2026. This page is refreshed weekly. Facts come from the Alabama Department of Transportation and the City of Homewood’s news page.

Three big projects shape driving in Homewood this fall: the diverging diamond interchange at I-65 and Lakeshore Parkway, ALDOT’s US 31 signal and sidewalk project, and the first phase of the Hollywood Boulevard bridge over Highway 280. Most of the US 31 and Hollywood Boulevard work happens at night.

Who to call

I-65 and Lakeshore Parkway: the diverging diamond

Work started in February 2026 on a diverging diamond interchange at Exit 255 on I-65 at Lakeshore Parkway (State Route 149), ALDOT said in its Feb. 24 announcement. Traffic on Lakeshore Parkway will cross to the left side of the road over the bridge and back again, which lets drivers turn left onto the interstate without waiting for a signal. Drivers entering I-65 South will take a straighter ramp on the southwest corner instead of today’s loop to the north.

Expect temporary lane closures and traffic shifts on Lakeshore Parkway and the ramps until then.

US 31: access management, Old Montgomery Highway to Ventura Avenue

ALDOT’s US 31 Access Management Project started Tuesday, Sept. 8. It is a state project inside Homewood. The work adds upgraded signals, changes to reduce conflict points and crashes, new sidewalks, curb ramps that meet the Americans with Disabilities Act, pedestrian signals and safer crossings. The city says most of the work is overnight, so daytime traffic should see changing patterns instead of long delays. The total cost is about $3.3 million: a $1.96 million state ATRIP II grant and about $1.36 million from the city.

The U.S. 31 pedestrian tunnel near Piggly Wiggly has been closed at both ends since July 6 for a renovation with new landscaping and lighting. The city said the work would take a few months.

Hollywood Boulevard bridge over Highway 280

Phase one began Aug. 3: new sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard from Malaga Avenue up to the bridge and in Mountain Brook. Expect periodic lane closures, much of the work at night. The city said phase one would take about eight months.

Phase two will widen the 1960 bridge, which carries nearly 20,000 cars a day, add a third lane, add a traffic light at the Highway 280 exit ramp, add a turn lane onto the ramp to Highway 280 East and build a walkway behind a concrete barrier. The city expects it to go out for bid in 2027, with about 12 months of construction. Homewood is not paying for the project.

City paving

The city published its 2026 paving schedule on May 1, listing streets to be paved through the end of the year. Expect short lane closures as crews move from street to street. The city also posts traffic alerts on its news page and through text alerts.
