Two crews pick up at Homewood homes. Amwaste, the city’s contractor, collects household garbage and recycling twice a week. The City of Homewood’s own claw truck, run by Public Works, collects debris piles, bagged leaves and large trash at the curb. Carts need to be out by 6 a.m.; debris piles by 6:30 a.m.

What day is my pickup?
Amwaste serves every home on either a Monday and Thursday route or a Tuesday and Friday route. Find yours on the city’s interactive Amwaste route map.
| Day | What goes out |
|---|---|
| First pickup (Monday or Tuesday) | Garbage and recycling, together in the same cart |
| Second pickup (Thursday or Friday) | Garbage only. No recyclables in the cart that day |
| Claw truck | Debris piles, on your route’s second collection day |
The city says the first-day load is taken to RePower in Montgomery, where recyclable material is separated from the waste stream. That is why there is no separate recycling cart.
Carts
The city’s garbage page says residents may put up to three carts at the curb, and that other carts may be used if they hold at least 45 gallons. Bag household garbage before it goes in the cart and break down boxes. If you never received a black Amwaste cart, request one from the city.
Residents who are 65 or older, or who have a medical disability, can apply for back-door service, where the crew collects the cart from the house.
Leaves, limbs and large piles
The city claw truck collects qualifying debris on the second collection day for your route, and you do not need to call for it. The city split its debris routes by ward on June 2, 2025; check the claw-truck route map (PDF) for your day.
- Three bags or fewer of leaves, pine straw, grass clippings or small debris go inside your garbage cart, not at the curb.
- Four or more bags can go at the curb for the claw truck.
- Limbs must be grouped into a pile. Single branches are not picked up.
- Put piles at the curb, never in the street, and away from power lines, mailboxes, poles, signs, walls and storm drains.
- Do not rake leaves into the street. The city says that keeps storm drains clear.
- Contractors must haul away any construction or landscaping debris they create.
The city’s list of materials not accepted includes construction debris, bricks, concrete and dirt, tires, car batteries, lithium-ion batteries, large car parts, cross-ties, pool chemicals, medical sharps, open paint cans (leave lids off so crews can check paint is solid) and more than household amounts of hazardous waste.
Accepted in the cart: normal household waste, broken glass in a container, broken-down moving boxes, alkaline batteries, household amounts of fluorescent bulbs and garden chemicals, small furniture and less than two cubic yards of limbs, bagged leaves or grass.
Holiday schedule
Amwaste observes six holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. When one falls on a weekday, every pickup from that day through the end of the week moves one day later. Pickups earlier in that week run as normal, and a holiday on a weekend changes nothing, according to the city’s holiday service page.
| Holiday | Date | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving | Thursday, Nov. 26 | Thursday pickup moves to Friday, Nov. 27; Friday pickup moves to Saturday, Nov. 28 |
| Christmas | Friday, Dec. 25 | Friday pickup moves to Saturday, Dec. 26 |
| New Year’s Day | Friday, Jan. 1, 2027 | Friday pickup moves to Saturday, Jan. 2 |
The claw truck follows the city’s holiday calendar, which also closes City Hall on Nov. 27 and Dec. 24. The city still asks residents to put debris out on their normal day in a holiday week, because crews catch up quickly.
