Remy’s Dog Park at Red Mountain Park

Red Mountain Park is run by Jefferson County Greenways, and the city of Homewood notes that it “sits right on Homewood’s edge.” Its Remy’s Dog Park has fenced play areas for large dogs, small dogs and dogs with special needs, according to the greenways’ dog etiquette guide. The rules:

  • Pick the area that fits your dog’s size and needs.
  • Unleash and leash in the double-gate area at each entrance, then close the gates and move away from them.
  • Watch your dog at all times; leave food and treats at home; no glass containers.
  • Do not use the park when the ground is wet or maintenance is under way. It is closed Wednesdays from 8 to 10 a.m. for maintenance.
  • Keep vaccinations current. Leave dogs that are in heat or sick at home.

Outside the fenced areas, all dogs must be on a leash and under a handler’s control on the trails, and owners must pick up after them. Bring water for your dog. Red Mountain Park’s entrances are at 2011 Frankfurt Drive and 2019 Venice Road in Birmingham, both reached from the Lakeshore Parkway exit of Interstate 65, according to the park’s visitor FAQ.

Patios

Frothy Monkey, 930 Oxmoor Road in Edgewood, welcomes well-behaved, leashed pets in its outdoor seating areas only, according to the cafe’s location page. The covered patio looks out on Edgewood. It is open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Other Homewood restaurants set their own pet rules; ask before you take a seat.

Walks and trails

The Shades Creek Greenway is Homewood’s main walking trail; see our walking and biking trails guide. The city has not posted a separate pet rule for the greenway or its parks, so call Homewood Parks at 205-332-6700 with questions about dogs in a particular park. Animals are not allowed at the two city pools except service animals, under the Homewood Parks pool rules.

Leash rules and strays

Homewood’s animal ordinance is not among the documents on the city’s ordinances page, which carries the zoning, sign and tree ordinances. For the current leash rule, ask the City Clerk at 205-332-6108.

Since Oct. 5, 2026, Homewood Animal Control has partnered with the Greater Birmingham Humane Society:

  • Report a stray to Homewood Police non-emergency dispatch, 205-332-6200. Strays are not picked up after hours; calls made after hours are handled the next business day.
  • Find a lost pet at GBHS, 6227 5th Ave. N. in Birmingham, until its new Sydney Drive shelter opens: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday; closed Sunday. 205-591-6522. Fees apply to pick up an animal, including a city fee.
  • Wildlife such as raccoons, possums, snakes, coyotes and foxes is not handled by Animal Control; the city refers residents to a private removal company.

Dogs at the library

The Homewood Public Library’s Barks and Books program lets children read to or hang out with friendly dogs and handlers from Hand in Paw one afternoon a month; the next is 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18. Event page.
