Last checked Oct. 17, 2026. Facts on this page come from the City of Homewood’s storm reporting notice and Alabama Power’s outage center.

Homewood’s electricity is delivered by Alabama Power. When the lights go out, report it to Alabama Power, not the city. The city handles what the storm leaves in the streets: fallen limbs, blocked roads and damaged sidewalks.

Who to call

Reporting an outage

  1. Check the outage map to see whether Alabama Power already knows about it.
  2. Report it by phone at 1-800-888-2726 or online.
  3. Watch for updates. Alabama Power customers are automatically enrolled in outage alerts by text, phone or email, which tell you when there is an outage in your area and when power is expected back. Change your alert preferences in your Alabama Power account.

A broken streetlight is reported separately, through Alabama Power’s streetlight outage form.

How power comes back

Alabama Power describes its restoration order this way:

Order What gets fixed
1 Power plants and the main distribution lines serving communities
2 Vital community services: hospitals, emergency and public safety services, water and sewage stations
3 Repairs that bring back the greatest number of customers in the least time
4 Smaller lines, down to individual lines in neighborhoods

Lines to individual homes come last, so one street can stay dark after most of the area is back on.

Generator safety

From Alabama Power’s generator safety tips:

  • Never run a generator indoors or in a partly enclosed space. Carbon monoxide builds up quickly and can kill; you cannot see or smell it.
  • Keep generators at least 20 feet from doors and windows, and use a battery-powered carbon monoxide detector.
  • Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. This “backfeeding” can seriously hurt utility workers and neighbors.
  • Keep the generator dry, on a dry surface under a canopy-like cover, and plug appliances straight into it or use a heavy-duty, three-prong outdoor extension cord.
  • If you feel dizzy, lightheaded or sick indoors, get to fresh air and call for help.

After the storm in Homewood

The city asks residents to report unsafe sidewalks, streets and other hazards right away, to Homewood Police for dangerous road conditions or to Public Works for road, sidewalk and surface problems. Storm debris from your own yard goes out for the city’s claw truck; see our trash and recycling guide. Follow the city’s text alerts for updates.
