West Homewood is the city’s west side, west of Green Springs Highway and centered on Oxmoor Road. It holds many of the city’s parks and fields, the Homewood Police Department’s headquarters, and a mix of homes, apartment complexes and businesses. The Oak Grove community, part of this area, was annexed into Homewood in 1955, the city’s history page says.

Where it is

The Historic Preservation Commission’s driving tour calls this Ward 2, West Homewood, and starts it “at Oak Grove Road and Oxmoor Road, near Patriot Park.” Its stops include Hall-Kent Elementary, the old Zelosophian Academy site and the Kent family’s dairy farm; the tour says Oak Grove Dairy was one of several dairies in what became West Homewood.

On this page the area is the city’s Ward 2 in its five-ward map layer, less the Wildwood shopping district around Lakeshore Parkway and the Forest Brook and Huntington Park streets south of it, which have their own pages. The streets with the most address points are Olympia Drive, Oxmoor Road, Oxmoor Circle, Chastaine Circle, Valley Avenue, Aquarius Drive and Green Springs Highway. Every address is in ZIP code 35209 and inside city limits.

The draft growth and conservation map in the city’s July 22, 2026, comprehensive plan workshop (PDF) puts West Homewood among the “Areas to Enhance,” meant to allow “additional housing options, and small neighborhood commercial (similar to Edgewood or the Mountain Brook villages).” The plan is still a draft.

The index is a modeled typical value for the middle third of homes, not a sale price. Getting around

  • Interstate 65: exit 256, Oxmoor Road, is the closest, by the exit numbers in OpenStreetMap. Exit 255, Lakeshore Drive and Lakeshore Parkway, is just south.
  • City Hall: about 3.2 miles from the middle of the area by road.
  • Airport: about 10.4 miles to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Both are road distances measured on the OpenStreetMap network with the OSRM routing engine, not drive times.
  • Transit: MAX On-Demand rides anywhere in the city limits for $1.50 a trip, booked in the MAX Connect app.

Green Springs Highway

The city’s Green Springs project page describes a concept to make the highway “a safe, beautiful gateway between Edgewood and West Homewood,” with narrower lanes, a tree-lined median and bike lanes on both sides. In January 2026 the Planning Commission voted 6-0, with one abstention, to recommend removing “minor vehicle repair” as a permitted use in the Green Springs Urban Development District, sending the change to the City Council.
