Welcome to Homewood. This page lists the first calls to make: power, water, gas and internet, your car and license, schools, trash and taxes. Our other guides cover most of these in depth, so this page links to them instead of repeating them.

First calls

Utilities

Electricity: Alabama Power. Request service through Alabama Power’s electric service requests page or your online account, where you can start, stop or transfer service. Alabama Power connects service Monday through Friday only; an order submitted by midnight is generally eligible for connection the next business day, according to its residential FAQs. It may ask for a deposit after a credit check. Outages: see our power outage guide.

Water: Central Alabama Water. City notices name the Birmingham Water Works as Homewood’s water provider, and its old site, bwwb.org, now opens Central Alabama Water. Start, stop or transfer service through its customer portal, or call customer service at 205-244-4000.

Natural gas: Spire. Spire distributes natural gas in central and northern Alabama. Check whether your address is served on Spire’s service availability page, then start service online.

Sewer. We could not confirm from an official source which agency bills sewer at every Homewood address. Ask your landlord or seller, or Central Alabama Water at 205-244-4000, when you start water service.

Internet. The FCC’s National Broadband Map lists the providers that report service at your exact address, with the technology and speeds each offers. Sign up through the provider’s own site.

Trash and recycling. There is nothing to sign up for: Amwaste picks up garbage and recycling twice a week and the city’s claw truck takes debris. If you have no black Amwaste cart, request one. See our trash and recycling guide for your pickup days.

Your car and driver’s license

  • Register your vehicle within 30 days. New Alabama residents have 30 days to title and register a vehicle without a penalty, the Shelby County license office explains; Tuscaloosa County gives the same 30-day rule for transferring an out-of-state registration. In Jefferson County, tags and titles go through the county; renewals are online at TagIT, and the Jefferson County Revenue Department is at 716 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. N., Birmingham, 205-325-5300.
  • Get an Alabama driver’s license within 30 days. Driver’s licenses are issued by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. With a valid out-of-state license, new residents take a written exam and an eye test, and without one a road test as well, the Mobile Police Department’s residency page explains. Check current requirements with ALEA before you go.

Schools

Every home in the city is served by Homewood City Schools: three elementary schools, Homewood Middle and Homewood High. Find your elementary zone and enrollment steps in our schools guide.

Taxes and your homestead exemption

Property taxes are due Oct. 1 and delinquent after Dec. 31. If you bought a home you live in, ask the county about a homestead exemption; you must own and occupy the home on the first day of the tax year to qualify. See our property tax guide.

Voting

Register at your new address with the Jefferson County Board of Registrars, 205-325-5550, or online. See our voting guide for deadlines.

Pets

Homewood Animal Control works through the Homewood Police Department and the Greater Birmingham Humane Society. Report a stray to police non-emergency at 205-332-6200; see who to call at City Hall.

Building, fencing or remodeling

Check with Inspections and Permits and Engineering and Zoning first; see our building permits and zoning guide.
